The future of the ute market is getting a serious shake-up, with Chery confirming its all-new diesel plug-in hybrid ute will arrive in New Zealand in 2027.
Known internally as the KP31, the new model is set to become the world’s first mass-produced diesel plug-in hybrid ute, combining the towing capability and torque Kiwi ute buyers expect with the efficiency benefits of advanced hybrid technology.
Following its Australian launch in late 2026, Chery has confirmed the new ute is destined for New Zealand, marking a significant expansion of the brand’s growing local line-up.
Under the bonnet, the KP31 is expected to feature a 2.5-litre twin-turbo diesel engine paired with Chery’s advanced Super Hybrid System. The combination has been engineered to deliver the performance and capability ute buyers demand, while improving fuel efficiency by around 10 per cent compared with conventional diesel-powered rivals. Chery also claims the diesel engine achieves an impressive thermal efficiency rating of 47 per cent.
The hybrid system has been designed to operate even if the battery isn’t regularly plugged in. Drivers can still enjoy the benefits of electrified technology without relying on public charging infrastructure, making it particularly appealing for rural and regional customers.
When it arrives, the KP31 is expected to offer a braked towing capacity of up to 3,500kg and a payload of around 1,000kg, putting it firmly in contention with established ute favourites. The vehicle will also feature four-wheel drive, front, centre and rear locking differentials, plus a low-range transfer case to maximise off-road capability.

The ute has been developed specifically to challenge some of the biggest names in the segment, including the BYD Shark 6, Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger and Kia Tasman.
With demand for hybrid and electrified vehicles continuing to grow across New Zealand, Chery’s diesel plug-in hybrid ute could offer a compelling alternative for buyers who want capability, efficiency and value in one package.
