GWM's Electric Vehicle Production Shifts to Familiar Territory for Kiwi Buyers
22 June, 2025

The next evolution of the GWM Ora hatchback is coming and for New Zealand drivers, it will feel closer to home than ever. Production of the refreshed Ora is shifting to the Rayong plant in Thailand, a facility once known for building the Holden Colorado, and now set to manufacture right-hand-drive electric vehicles for this part of the world.
For Kiwis, this means future Ora models will be sourced from a location with strong ties to the Australasian automotive landscape. The Rayong factory, fully modernised by GWM after its acquisition in 2020, is designed to support growing regional demand for electric vehicles. The plant’s annual capacity of around 80,000 vehicles allows for quicker production and potentially shorter lead times for New Zealand customers.
The updated Ora, due for release in late 2025, brings with it a sharper design and enhanced features aimed at offering greater value in a competitive compact EV segment. Positioned to compete with other popular hatchbacks, the Ora stands out with its distinctive styling and strong warranty backing, making it an increasingly attractive option for local drivers considering an affordable, well-equipped electric car.

The decision to shift production to Thailand reflects GWM’s wider commitment to this region, including a focus on right-hand-drive markets like New Zealand. It is also a strategic move that connects the Ora with a manufacturing site familiar to many Kiwi motoring enthusiasts, thanks to its Holden legacy.
As the EV landscape in New Zealand continues to evolve, this move signals GWM’s intent to be a serious long-term player. For drivers, it is another sign that high-spec electric vehicles are becoming more accessible, with local delivery, local relevance and real driving appeal.
