16 February, 2026

Jaecoo has confirmed New Zealand pricing for its upcoming J5 EV, with the compact electric SUV set to start from $42,990 plus on road costs ahead of its expected arrival in March. The model joins a growing list of electric SUVs entering the local market, offering a single well equipped variant designed to appeal to everyday drivers looking to make the switch to electric mobility.

Positioned as a smaller sibling to the J7, the J5 sits within Jaecoo’s SUV focused line up and shares its electric platform with the Omoda E5.

Design & Performance

The J5 EV is powered by a front wheel drive electric motor producing 155kW and 288Nm, paired with a 58.9kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. Jaecoo claims a WLTP driving range of up to 402km, placing it firmly in the practical daily use category for Kiwi drivers.

Fast charging is supported at up to 130kW DC, allowing a 30 to 80 percent charge in around 28 minutes, while AC charging is available through single or three phase setups. Styling follows Jaecoo’s rugged design direction, with upright proportions, slim LED lighting and an EV specific grille.

Interior & Technology

Inside, the cabin centres around a 13.2 inch infotainment touchscreen and an 8.88 inch digital instrument cluster. Features include ambient lighting, a panoramic glass roof with powered sunshade, wireless phone charging and dual zone climate control.

Jaecoo highlights its silicone based synthetic leather seats, described as antibacterial and wear resistant, adding a practical edge for families and pet owners. Heated and ventilated front seats, powered adjustment and advanced safety technology are also standard.

Pet Friendly Practicality

Jaecoo has also placed a focus on everyday usability, including features that may appeal to pet owners. The J5 EV’s silicone based synthetic leather upholstery is designed to be durable and easy to clean, while the flat floor and SUV ride height make loading dogs or pet carriers simpler.

Combined with rear air vents and a spacious boot area, these small touches help position the J5 EV as a practical option for New Zealand households balancing electric driving with real world lifestyle needs.

Why it matters to New Zealand drivers

Electric vehicle adoption in New Zealand continues to evolve, and new models like the J5 EV expand choice in the compact SUV segment. With competitive pricing and a usable driving range, the J5 is aimed at buyers considering their first EV or looking for a practical alternative to traditional petrol SUVs. As more brands introduce electric options across different price points, vehicles like the J5 EV help broaden access to zero tailpipe emission motoring while maintaining familiar SUV styling and features.
