GWM Doubles Down on Plug-In Power With New Cannon Ute

GWM is proving it has an engine for every kind of buyer. Just weeks after announcing a powerful new 3.0-litre turbo diesel for the Tank 500 and Cannon Alpha, one of the first launches of its kind globally, the brand is back with news of the Cannon Hi4-T. This plug-in hybrid version of its one-tonne ute will double GWM’s PHEV ute range in New Zealand, joining the larger Cannon Alpha.

Power and Capability

The Hi4-T system, already proven in the Cannon Alpha and Tank range, pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined output of 310kW and 750Nm.

Despite the added electrification, it keeps a traditional transmission and mechanical four-wheel drive system, meaning drivers get hybrid efficiency without sacrificing the rugged capability ute owners rely on. Braked towing capacity remains at a solid 3.5 tonnes.

Range, Efficiency and Practicality

A 33.1kWh battery delivers up to 115km of electric-only driving, while combined with the petrol engine, total range stretches beyond 1,000km, figures based on NEDC testing standards.

Claimed fuel economy sits at an impressive 2.4L per 100km. The Cannon also features vehicle to load capability, with 230V power outlets built into the tub, handy for tradies and adventurers alike.

Pricing and Availability

GWM New Zealand says the Cannon Hi4-T will become “one of New Zealand’s most affordable plug-in hybrid utes,” aiming to lower the barrier to electrified ute ownership without compromising on capability, performance or practicality. For context, the larger, top-spec Cannon Alpha PHEV has an RRP of $71,990 plus on-roads.

Full pricing and specifications are yet to be confirmed, with local arrival expected in late September or early October.
