Ford’s New Electric Van Just Got a Price Tag. And It’s a Good One

Ford New Zealand has put a number on its new electric workhorse: the Transit City will land here at $58,990 plus on-road costs, with the first vans reaching customers in January 2027. For a business ute or van, that’s a genuinely sharp starting point for an EV.

One van, no decisions to agonise over

Ford has kept things refreshingly simple with the Transit City: there’s just one specification. No wading through wheelbase options, roof heights or trim levels – you pick the colour and get on with your day. It arrives alongside the Bronco Basecamp, a range-extender SUV also confirmed for New Zealand in the second half of 2027.

Built to actually survive a workday

Under the floor sits a 56kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery for handling relentless fast-charging without degrading, which matters a lot if this van is going to spend its life doing multiple stops a day. It drives the front wheels through a 110kW motor and returns a WLTP combined range of up to 254km, stretching to as much as 380km on the WLTP city-cycle test.

Ford didn’t just guess at that battery size – it pulled telematics data from 2,312 Transit Custom vans working across Australia over 20 months. It found the average urban daily run was just 76km, with 90 percent of routes covering 200km or less. In other words, the range is sized around how these vans are actually used, not how they might theoretically be used once a year.

Charging is quick when you need it: DC fast charging peaks at 87kW, enough for a 10–80 percent top-up in about 33 minutes, or a 10-minute splash-and-dash adding roughly 68km of range. Plug into the 11kW onboard AC charger overnight and you’ll wake up to a full battery in around 5.5 hours. There’s also a one-pedal driving mode tuned for stop-start city traffic, and vehicle-to-load capability (Ford Pro Power Onboard) for running tools straight off the battery.

Practical where it counts

Payload tops out at 1,085kg, and the load bay holds 6.4 cubic metres – enough for three pallets, with a full-surface load liner, side trim protection and lashing points all standard. Inside, it’s better equipped than you might expect at this price: keyless entry, a heated driver’s seat, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen running wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, backed by autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, parking sensors and lane departure warning.

Ford’s own testing regime for the van included more than 200,000 door-slam cycles in climate chambers, and it’s backed by an eight-year, 160,000km battery warranty alongside 12-month or 30,000km service intervals – with Ford tipping lower running costs than a diesel equivalent, thanks to no turbo, fuel injection or multi-speed gearbox to maintain.
