Mercedes-Benz G 400 d headed to New Zealand

14 March, 2021

The intrepid Mercedes-Benz G 400 d joins the New Zealand line-up in 2021.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class

With outstanding power and torque, state-of-the-art engine technology and adaptive damping as standard, the new Mercedes-Benz G 400 d is set to stamp its authority on the New Zealand market with impressive agility, off-road ability, refinement, plus unrivalled muscular presence.

The new G 400 d joins the Mercedes-AMG G 63 as the second member of the much-loved ‘G-Wagen’ family in New Zealand, and bolsters the company’s offering in the upper-large SUV segment, which also includes the recently added Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 4MATIC+ seven-seater.

Under the bonnet of the G 400 d is the 3.0-litre OM 656 diesel engine, packing the most power of any diesel in the history of the Mercedes-Benz passenger car range. Its workhorse credentials include 243 kW of power and an impressive 700 Nm of torque.

Features of this standard-setting powerplant include variable valve lift on the exhaust side for better emission control, Formula 1-inspired NANOSLIDE® technology to reduce friction and resist wear, high-tech steel pistons, two-stage turbocharging, and the use of lightweight aluminium for the crankcase and cylinder head. Fuel economy is rated at 9.5 L/100 km (ADR combined cycle), while acceleration from zero to 100km/h takes 6.4 seconds.

Adaptive damping as standard

With an abundance of driving muscle matched by outstanding levels of technology and refinement, the six-cylinder OM 656 proves an excellent metaphor for the vehicle it powers. The G 400 d is underpinned by a ladder-type frame made of steel up to 3.4 mm thick, which is particularly suited to off-road use. Three differential locks for the all-wheel drive system ensure that in difficult terrain, the traction of an individual wheel can provide forward motion. Additionally, selecting low-range (available on the move) increases torque and optimises gear shifts from the nine-speed automatic gearbox for off-road use.

Suspension with adaptive damping is a standard inclusion on New Zealand-delivered vehicles, adjusting to the driver’s preferred style and compensating for uneven surfaces. The adaptive dampers withstand greater forces than standard passive shock absorbers and also offer improved on-road performance.

Comprehensively appointed

The Mercedes-Benz G 400 d packages an array of luxurious appointments as standard equipment including a 15-speaker Burmester surround-sound system, electronically adjustable and heated leather front seats, three-zone climate control, an Off-Road Information Centre including altitude, compass, body angle, wheel angle and inclination, a multifunction steering wheel in Nappa leather, Parking Package including Parking Assist PARKTRONIC and a 360° camera, MULTIBEAM LED headlights, and a sliding glass sunroof with tilt function and interior blind. The COMAND infotainment system is rendered across two 12.3-inch digital screens and includes navigation with 3D map and dynamic route guidance, DAB+ digital radio, and smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay™ and Google Android™ Auto. The G 400 d is compatible with the Mercedes me Connect app that allows remote activation and monitoring of numerous key features from a compatible smartphone.

The G 400 d is also comprehensively equipped with a suite of safety measures including Driving Assistance Package, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Assist and the acclaimed PRE-SAFE® system that prepares the vehicle and its occupants in the event of an impending collision.

Externally, the G 400 d is distinguished by a Stainless Steel Package including exterior protective strip with black striped trim inset, side running boards and spare wheel cover, plus chrome elements in the radiator trim, dark tinted glass behind the B-pillar, metallic paint and 19-inch eight-spoke light alloy wheels. Tyre pressure monitoring and pre-installation for a trailer hitch are also standard.

Mercedes-AMG G 63

For G-Class customers seeking even more performance and presence, the range-topping Mercedes-AMG G 63 continues to make an unmissable statement. Above the feature-packed G 400 d, the G 63 is equipped with Nappa leather upholstery and door panels, a leather-trimmed dashboard, DINAMICA microfibre roof liner, a Nappa leather-lined AMG Performance steering wheel, heated outer rear seats, and a digital TV tuner.

Of course, at the heart of the G 63 is the potent and much-loved Mercedes-AMG 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 with a mighty 430kW and 850Nm, allied to an AMG SPEEDSHIFT 9G-TRONIC auto, an AMG Performance selectable exhaust system, AMG DYNAMIC SELECT and AMG RIDE CONTROL.

It rides on 21-inch AMG 5-twin spoke alloy wheels and features AMG-specific body styling including flared wheel arches, front apron, AMG red brake callipers and distinctive AMG lettering.

The new Mercedes-Benz G 400 d will retail for $217,100 (MRRP) and is expected to arrive in New Zealand showrooms in July 2021. The Mercedes-AMG G 63 is available now, priced at $295,400 (MRRP).
