The Jaecoo J5 Electric Vehicle has made a striking entrance into the New Zealand market and automotive publication Driven Car Guide has put it through its paces. The verdict? A genuinely impressive package that punches well above its $42,990 plus on-roads price tag.
From the outside, the J5 cuts a distinctive figure. Its squared-off, upmarket stance gives it a premium road presence that belies its price, and Driven Car Guide’s reviewer noted that it is a genuinely attractive small SUV that looks far more expensive than its price tag suggests.
Step inside and the quality continues. The cabin is built around a neatly integrated 13.2-inch vertical touchscreen, with soft-touch surfaces throughout and comfortable, high-quality synthetic leather seats. It is, by any measure, a refined and well-considered interior for the money.
On the road, the J5 delivers a composed and enjoyable drive. The ride quality is a standout feature, being impressively compliant and well-controlled, soaking up bumps with a sophistication you wouldn’t necessarily expect from something costing $43k. The driver assistance systems are equally well-tuned, subtle and helpful without ever becoming intrusive.

Key specs worth knowing: the J5 is powered by a 155kW/288Nm electric motor, draws energy from a 58.9kWh battery, and delivers a WLTP range of 402km. It also comes backed by a seven-year unlimited kilometre vehicle warranty and an eight-year battery warranty.
Driven Car Guide summed it up plainly: for a car priced under $43,000, the Jaecoo J5 EV is a superb package, a handsome, incredibly competent, and comfortable small SUV.
