What is a Super Hybrid System? Chery’s Plug-in Hybrid Tech Explained for New Zealand Drivers

7 August, 2025

As interest in low-emissions vehicles continues to grow in New Zealand, many drivers are exploring alternatives to traditional petrol and diesel models. Among these are plug-in hybrids, which combine electric and petrol power for improved efficiency. Now, a new term is emerging in the market: Super Hybrid. So what is a Super Hybrid, and how does it differ from a standard plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV)?

With the official arrival of Chery in New Zealand, alongside its Omoda and Jaecoo brands, the company has introduced its proprietary Super Hybrid System (SHS), available across select Chery, Omoda & Jaecoo models. This new technology offers a different take on plug-in hybrids and is designed to address some of the limitations of conventional systems.

Plug-in Hybrid vs Super Hybrid System: What is the Difference?

Conventional plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) rely on regular charging to achieve their best performance. Once the battery is depleted, most switch to petrol-only driving. This can lead to reduced power, increased fuel use and a noisier driving experience.

Chery’s Super Hybrid System works differently. It is designed to preserve a minimum level of battery charge, which helps the vehicle maintain consistent performance at all times. Even if the vehicle is never plugged in, it still operates efficiently.

Do I Need to Plug in a Super Hybrid?

No. Unlike most plug-in hybrids, Chery’s Super Hybrid System is engineered to deliver strong performance whether it is charged or not. While plugging in allows for electric-only driving in short-distance situations, it is not required for the system to function efficiently.

Lucas Harris, Chief Operating Officer of Chery Australia and New Zealand, confirms that the system is designed with this flexibility in mind. “Our technology is so good, you can [drive] it as an HEV [hybrid electric vehicle] 100% of the time.”

This makes the Super Hybrid particularly practical in New Zealand, where charging infrastructure can be limited in rural areas and longer journeys are common. The system offers the benefits of electrified driving without requiring a change in daily habits or reliance on charging networks.

One Technology, Three Brands

Chery is the parent company of Omoda and Jaecoo, both of which entered the New Zealand market in early 2024. Until recently, these sub-brands were the only Chery Group vehicles available locally. Now, Chery is also introducing vehicles under its own name. Each brand is aimed at a different type of customer, from Omoda’s design-focused drivers to Jaecoo’s adventure-seeking buyers, while Chery offers practical, family-friendly options. All three share the same advanced engineering, including the Super Hybrid System, as part of the wider Chery Group.

A Smarter Hybrid Option for New Zealand Drivers

Chery’s Super Hybrid System provides a more adaptable alternative to traditional PHEVs. It delivers the benefits of electric power without requiring daily charging and ensures reliable performance in real-world conditions.
